Newman Robotics Goes To State

On Sunday, January 22 the Lower School robotics team competed at the First Lego League (FLL) Louisiana State Championship! Fifty-eight teams from around the state participated in the event held at Jesuit High School. Our team earned their spot by receiving the Core Values award from our qualifier back in December.

This year’s theme, Superpowered, was focused on the topic of energy. One component of the competition is the innovation research project. Our team devised a way for students to burn off some extra energy at school while helping to keep the lights on with a hand cranked generator. The other major scoring component is the robot game; to build and program a Lego robot capable of solving a series of challenges, with no remote control allowed. The robot must be autonomous and rely on the code created by students ahead of time to solve each challenge and score points.

Our robot scored a total of 120 points during the robot game, and while this score was not enough to advance us to nationals, we are incredibly proud of the work it took to earn their place at the state championship! Our next season has already begun today as we jump right into the World War II Robotics Challenge, which will be held at the World War II Museum right here in New Orleans on Saturday, May 13!
