Brandon V. Lewis, a native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, is a testament to the nurturing influence of his single mother and the strong convictions of his grandparents. His artistic journey began at the tender age of three when he was encouraged to draw a bumblebee for a school assignment. This early foray into art revealed his innate talent, much to the surprise of his mother. Recognizing his gift, his grandmothers supported him with drawing tablets and pencils, fueling his passion for art. Through the East Baton Rouge Parish School System, Lewis honed his skills, joining a talented arts program that introduced him to exceptional teachers. His high school art teacher, Mr. Bob White, recognized Lewis's unique storytelling style, encouraging him to continue expressing the complex narratives of his subjects without traditional portraiture. Influenced by folk artists, Lewis found that his paintings were a means of connecting with and honoring the stories of his ancestors.
After graduating high school, Lewis pursued a degree in history at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, focusing on African American history, which deepened his appreciation for his heritage. For the past decade, he has dedicated his art to celebrating the narratives of his community, drawing inspiration from the strong Black women and wise men in his life. Lewis describes himself as a custodian of their stories, using his paintbrush as a pen to narrate their experiences. His work has been showcased in various exhibitions, including the Black Heritage Gallery and the "Healing Power of Jazz" at the Louisiana Art and Science Museum. Through his artistry, Lewis aims to ensure that the stories of his family and community endure, transcending time and continuing to inspire future generations.
Brandon V. Lewis is represented by Ferrara Showman Gallery in New Orleans.
