Big Basketball Win!

T.J. Locke
Rick Kohnke did such a great job summing up the big victory, I thought I'd post it here. Thanks, Rick!

To all Newman basketball fans and family:
The Newman Greenies’ varsity basketball team absolutely dominated a good 15-9 Lusher team last night at Lusher gym in each team’s district opener.  Newman lead at half time by a score of 25-10 thanks to its stifling, aggressive man-to-man team defense that frustrated Lusher from the opening tip off to the final horn.  A very focused and intense Newman team put together 4 full quarters of complete basketball in all phases of the game. Newman’s varsity record goes to 14 wins -8 losses with last night’s district win.

Newman’s scoring was balanced with senior captain Havens Cary and junior Michael Markowitz leading the way with double figures w/ 14 and 11 points respectively. Sophomore Sam Kohnke led Newman in rebounding with 8. Junior Odell Beckham led Newman with 3 assists.  Odell and sophomore Braden Weaver were effective thieves with 3 steals apiece. The Greenies shot extremely well from the floor. Notably, no Lusher player scored more than 4 points.

If Newman plays the balance of their season with the intensity, focus and commitment, particularly on defense, which they have exhibited in their last few games, this young team should do very well in and beyond their district play, which is what counts for the playoffs. Spread the word and come catch the Greenies in its remaining home district games.
Next game:   Varsity only (no JV) THIS Friday (1-22-10) @ 6:15pm vs. Douglass in the Palaestra. This is Newman’s varsity district home opener against Douglass (16-5), who has been selected as the district pre-district favorite and is ranked #22 in Class AA.
Only the varsity basketball team is scheduled (no jv game) for the 6:15pm tip off. Come one, come all with “da luv” this Friday night @ 6:15pm—
Go Greenies!
