High Heels for High Hopes: Newman Alumnae Make a Difference

R. Hibbert

When some people see suffering in the world, they are inspired to give; others see a chance to help, and they roll up their sleeves and do something about it. Case in point: Newman seniors Shelby Sanderford and Kaler Zetzmann, and alumnae Brooke Levy '09, Taylor Rees '09, and Helena Huguley '09. When they attended a polo match that benefitted the charity Sentebale, they thought, "We could do that." They didn't go out and buy polo gear, though. Instead, they teamed up with two more friends, Adele Humphreys and Lindsey Gengo, to form Forget Me Not NOLA, a charity dedicated to alleviating hunger and the cruel effects of HIV/AIDS in the tiny, landlocked country of Lesotho.

Due to the high incidence of HIV/AIDS and substandard living conditions, Lesotho has a huge number of orphans struggling without a support structure — but not without hope. This group of thoughtful young women organized a charity fashion show set for May 22, called High Heels for High Hopes, to benefit Sentabale. At the show, 100 young women and girls from the New Orleans area will host the fashion show, champagne reception, dinner and dance. Together they hope to raise thousands of dollars to help the children of Lesotho.
