[FULL STORY]
After a spring full of intense matches and serious training, Newman’s tennis teams wrapped up their season at the state finals today. Singles player Chris Koch (Newman) played Adrepont (University High player) for the state title today at City Park and lost. The doubles team of Henry Friedler and Sean Laughlin won state in doubles. For the girls team, Winnie Yeates placed 3rd in singles. Read on for and explanation of our Runner Up status.
There is a four-tiered system to determine the state champion for tennis. First, the team with the most points wins, but at the close of play, Newman and University High were tied for total points. The second tier is number of champions, and U-High reigned in singles while Newman took the doubles title. Third tier is comprised of how many finalists each school had – again, Newman and U-High were tied. The fourth tier and deciding factor was that U-High sent more players to the Semi Finals and so they won state championship. Congratulations to all of our players on some great tennis!
