This year 6th grade Science Teacher Lisa Coulon’s class conducted a long-range study on water quality in Bayou St. John. In conjunction with the Pontchartrain Basin Foundation, the 6th graders tested bayou water-quality throughout the year. Testing pH, salinity, dissolved oxygen and turbidity (murkiness), the students researched the bayou’s ability to sustain animal and plant life. Good news! Bayou St. John is healthy!
For their final exams, the students worked in groups to publish their results in video form. Each block of students produced one finalist, and the finalists competed for the 2011 Science People’s Choice Award. The winning video was from D Block’s Delaney Sell, Christy Mo, Chloe Friedman, and Arthur Lemann. Please join us in congratulating them for their accomplishment.
While this award is impressive, we should also express our thanks to Lisa Coulon and the Pontchartrain Basin Foundation; they are the people keeping an eye on the health of the Bayou St. John and Lake Pontchartrain water systems’ health. They helped the students learn about water systems and the effect of pollution, and how our actions can have an effect on the environment.
