Former Faculty Member Revisits Newman

E. O'Brien
[FULL STORY]

Last week, Allan A. Ryan, Jr., a former Newman faculty member, visited the School after an absence of more than forty years. He spent some time catching up with School Librarian Dave Prescott, an old colleague, and alumna Stephanie Bruno ’70, whom he taught in his time at Newman.

Ryan arrived on the Newman scene in the fall of 1967 to begin his year-long New Orleans adventure. He taught civics to freshmen of the Class of 1970 and accompanied them to Washington, D.C. Other beloved teachers, including Dave Prescott and Ralph Weddington, also began working at Newman in the fall of 1967.  A recent Dartmouth graduate at the time, Ryan spent just one year at the School, but he left an impression on the upper school students that he taught. Ryan went to law school the next year and dedicated a significant portion of his career to the United States Justice Department. Currently, he serves as an attorney in Harvard's Office of General Counsel, and he is also the instructor of a course called War Crimes, Genocide, and Justice. When he is not teaching he is working on his writing. He has written many scholarly articles, as well as a book entitled Quiet Neighbors: Prosecuting Nazi War Criminals in America. He has just finished another book, which should be published in the near future.
