After a few weeks of practices, the newly formed MS tennis teams completed their first matches last week. The boys had a good showing against Country Day with players Mickal Adler, John Adler, Max Kanner, Elliott Clay, Ram Ayyala, and Robert Autenreith giving the Cajuns some great competition and long rallies. The girls played a tough Ursuline team last Monday and are to be commended for winning 2 out of the 4 matches. Players in the match were Erin Autenreith, Alexandra Herman, Rebecca French, Sydney Steiner, Sloane Clay, Helen Hawkins, DeDe Drouilhet, and Margaret Patin. Another group of girls took on St. Martin's on Tuesday and won 1 of 3 matches. Congratulations to Lexie Gottsegen, Georgia Fischmann, Davis Goldenberg, Cameron Markowitz, Camille Fischmann, and Georgie Plotkin for a great effort at that match. Best of luck to the students playing this week in matches against Trinity, Kehoe-France, Country Day, and Audubon Charter!

Golf

The Newman golf team edged out Destrehan on March 19 at Belle Terre Country Club. The score was Newman - 177 and Destrehan - 179. Scores for individual team members were: Joe Maruri 38, Robert Poche 43, Russell Gardner 46, and Peter Moss 50. The Newman team is currently 2-0.

Softball

Last week the MS softball team was able to get one game in against Ursuline, but it was a loss. The game against McGehee was cancelled due to rain. This week the team will play Country Day at Pontiff Playground at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 27 and McGehee at Audubon Fields at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 28.

Baseball

Last week’s downpours washed out the varsity baseball team’s games, but the boys are still enjoying their power ranking of No. 1 in the state (or No. 2, depending on which ranking you reference).  District play begins this week, and the team’s next game will be vs. Thomas Jefferson at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, followed by a make-up game against Hannan on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.

In JV baseball, the boys lost in a close away game against Chalmette. The Greenies’ two runs in the first inning and another run in the 4th inning spelled trouble for the opposition, but the team rallied, scoring 2 runs in each of the 5th and 6th innings. Newman could not score in the 7th, leaving Chalmette victorious, 4-3.

Track and Field

The Newman boys and girls varsity track teams competed in the Sugar Bowl Track Classic this past Friday and Saturday at Tad Gormley Stadium in City Park. This is one of the largest high school track meets in the country with over 50 schools competing.

Individually, the boys had eleven seasonal best efforts, of which six were also career personal best records. Two of our highest places were: Philip Stephens’s third place finish in the shot put with a career personal record throw of 52’ 1 ½”. Justin Harrell’s fourth place finish in the high jump was also a career personal record jump of 6’ 4”. As a team, the boys finished 20th out of 34 teams from Florida, Alabama, Tennessee, Mississippi, and Louisiana.

The girls track team finished 8th overall, thanks to an outstanding performance by Camille Barnett, who finished 2nd in the 800 meter run and breaking her own school record. Camille was also a member of the 4x800 meter relay team of Haley Johnson, Katherine Woolridge, and Hannah Kalozdi that finished 3rd and smashed the school record by 28 seconds! Haley also finished 3rd in her 3200 meter race. And at the end of the day, Lynne Sneed, Jada Hawkins, Avery Rowan, and Camille Barnett finished 5th in the 4x400 meter relay. Finally, Jada Hawkins, Sydney Tucker, Lehka Thengada, and Avery Rowan all tied or set new personal best times or marks this weekend, with Avery setting a new school record in the 300 meter hurdles. Great job ladies!

The next meet is our own 28th Annual Newman Track and Field Invitational this Friday at West Jefferson High School’s Stadium and adjacent field complex on the West Bank. The field events begin at 3:30 p.m., and the track events begin at 6:00 p.m. Any fan support at our only “home” meet would be appreciated.
