Volleyball and football had a smashing week, defeating opponents and making records. The volleyball team dispatched two of its biggest rivals, while the football team played a game that was front-page news in Saturday’s Sports Section of the The Times-Picayune. Read about these teams cross country, swimming, and a special basketball update from Coach Todd in the story below.
Sports Updates
Football:
The big story of the week is the varsity football game, an incredible match versus Carver in the pouring rain last Friday night. The Greenies played a grueling game at Pan American Stadium with an astounding final score of 72-68.
Coach Stewart said of the game “It's hard to even put Friday’s game into words. In the game Jabiari Tyler set records for passing yards (457), total touchdowns (9), passing (6), and a school record for points. Jabiari Tyler was selected as the
maxpreps.com New Orleans Player of the Week, and
The Times-Picayune has again named him the New Orleans Athlete Player of the week. This is the second time in three weeks, an unbelievable achievement! The game also included many personal records and accomplishments across the team. The 72-point score was the highest ever in the history of our program. Friday Night Football called it the state game of the year and one that would be discussed for years to come. It truly was a once in a lifetime game.”
WGNO covered the game on the Friday Night Football show, calling the game “unbelievable,” “unheard of,” and a “tremendous win.” The hosts seem flabbergasted at the score of the game, and the best quote from the video was “I’ve seen some lopsided scores, but never
that lopsided, both ways.”

The JV football team had an exciting 14-12 victory over Thomas Jefferson at Lupin Field. Alex Abramson threw two scoring passes in the effort.
The 7th/8th grade team had a huge 32-6 win over Brother Martin last Thursday. Chris Lane led the effort with two interceptions for touchdowns, the second of which went 80 yards to end the first half!
Volleyball:
It was also a very exciting week for the varsity volleyball team. On Tuesday, September 25, the girls went up against perennial rival Sacred Heart in the Palaestra. Though Sacred Heart put up a fight, the Greenies won in three games. Next up was De La Salle, with a #2 power ranking, on Thursday, September 27. After two Newman wins, the De La Salle team came back, winning 25-17, but the Greenies sealed the deal, winning the match in the fourth game. See the scores and stats from both games below.

Last week was a busy week for all the middle school volleyball teams. The week started off at Country Day with the White and A team playing. The White team fell short in their match; however, the A team beat Country Day in three very close games, 22-25, 25-22 and 15-7. The Green, White, and A team then travelled to Trinity to play on Thursday. The Green and White teams were victorious, but the A team was not. On Friday, the 6th grade volleyball teams travelled to Ursuline to play in their Play Day. Each team played three games.
In case you missed it – the varsity volleyball team put together a music video set to the tune of “Call Me Maybe.”

Cross Country:
The varsity cross country team did not compete last week, but the boys and girls are preparing for the St. Joseph’s Invitational scheduled to take place this Saturday in Baton Rouge.
Despite the rainy weather this weekend, the middle school cross country team competed in the Holy Cross/Chalmette High invitational on Saturday. The girls took 2nd place in the meet and all of the girls who competed set new personal records! Brooke Yacavone placed in the top ten with a time of 14:39. Following her lead, Margot Lapeyre finished with a time of 15:47 and Carter Carey finished with a time of 16:01.
Eleven of the boys set new personal records at the meet. The top three finishers were John Gainey (14:01), John Adler (14:14), and Josh Chamberlain (14:37). We are proud of all of the athletes! Our next meet is the St. Joseph’s Academy Invitational in Baton Rouge on Saturday, October 6.
Special Basketball Update from Coach Kemper Todd
This year’s captains, Duke Douglas and Matthew Winsberg, along with senior twins Kendall and Kyle Lewis, have done an outstanding job of leading a very young and inexperienced group of underclassmen. Juniors Kemper Todd, Emile Garon, and Cyrus Luo are joined by newcomers Andrew Chunn and Joe Maruri. The sophomore class is led by Peter Drennan who is joined by Ido Caspi, Aiden Oestreicher, Kevin Hill, and Abbas Mohammadi. Our freshmen class of David Richard, Cass Lapeyre, Austin Carriere, and Apurv Srivastav round out the players who participated in this year’s conditioning. They are very proud of their effort and are excited to get onto the court for practice. Expectations are high for this year and we are ready for the work to come.
The season begins with scrimmages against St. Augustine on November 1 and Jesuit on November 6. This year, we will also play in a Hall of Fame game at Jesuit on November 10, before hosting Lusher in our own Jamboree on November 15. We should be ready for our opening tournament at Lusher on November 19-21.
