Sports Updates:
Basketball
Last week the boys varsity basketball team traveled to South Plaquemines, played at home against Cohen, and played Curtis at Curtis. It was truly a challenging week!
On Tuesday, the Greenies won their 6th District game and their 23rd win overall. Every player scored in a thrilling 83-30 victory over South Plaquemines. Emile Garon led all scorers with 17 points, while Kyle Lewis added 15, Duke Douglas 14, and Peter Drennan 10 points (including knocking down three “threes”)! At home on Friday night, Duke Douglas scored 24 points while playing in half of the game. Kemper Todd hit five three-pointers, making all but one of his six attempts. Kendall Lewis chipped in 11 and Peter Drennan contributed 9.
Then on Saturday, in a packed gym in Harahan, Newman waged war on the defending State Champion and current #5-ranked Patriots from John Curtis. Kendall Lewis led all scorers with 22, the last three of which came on a slam dunk while getting fouled. The place went crazy, even the Curtis fans were applauding Kendall’s athleticism. Duke Douglas added 14 points, while Justin Harrell pitched in 11. The game was physical, fast, and truly exciting. Newman led the whole way and then extended the lead as the Patriots tried to press. Many times the Greenies would finish attacking the press with spectacular passes from Matthew Winsberg, leading to thunderous dunks! Newman won, 60-41.

Playoff Schedule:
Bidistrict on Tuesday, February 19, 7:00 p.m. at Newman
Regional on Friday, February 22, 7:00 p.m. – Location TBA
Quarterfinals on Tuesday, February 26, 7:00 p.m. – Location TBA
Our freshman team played two tough games this past week, but fell short in both contests. They lost to Rummel on Thursday night 51-46. David Richard led in scoring with 18, followed by Elbert Thomas with 11. They had a much better effort in their second game against John Curtis on Saturday in a losing battle (25-20). Elbert Thomas led with 9 points in that game. Both opponents had dominant inside presence, which made it very difficult for us. The players deserve credit for fighting hard for four quarters in both games.
This will be the final week of freshman basketball, with games against Brother Martin today at 6:00 p.m. at Brother Martin. The boys will travel to Lusher on Wednesday to play at 5:00 p.m., and finally on Saturday morning, February 9, against Chalmette at 10:00 a.m. and Ben Franklin at 12:00 p.m. in the Palaestra. The Chalmette game was originally on the schedule for Friday but was rescheduled due to conflicts.
The
girls middle school basketball team completed their season this week with two regular season wins against McGehee and Sacred Heart. The team lost a tough battle to Sacred Heart in the Ivy League playoffs on Wednesday to finish out their post-season.
The team will be losing three 8th graders: Korrin Murillo; Carter Macdiarmid; and newcomer to Newman, New Orleans, and basketball, Gabriella Munoz. Please join us in wishing them luck as they help grow the JV and varsity programs next year. The team had a great season and saw great improvement in team play as well as on the individual skill level. Every player contributed offensively with points at one time or another during the season! Everyone is looking forward to next year!
The 7th grade played John Curtis on Tuesday. It was a hard-fought game, coming down to the last seconds, but they ultimately lost 42-40.
They then moved onto the Christian Brothers 7th Grade Tournament. They played St. Martin’s on Thursday, winning 41-31. They then lost to Christian Brothers 30-29 on a last-second shot, after leading most of the game by 8 or 10. Unfortunately, they missed eight straight free-throws down the stretch. On Saturday they beat Holy Cross 47-45, finishing the tournament tied for 2nd.
They end the season with the Metro Middle School Tournament, which starts today. They play St. Andrew’s at 5:00 p.m. at Kehoe France. If they win they will play at 5:00 p.m. tomorrow, and a win would put them in the championship at 4:00 p.m. All games are at Kehoe France.
The Newman 6th grade basketball team finished their season with a loss in the Metro Tournament against Holy Cross. They finished at 7-7, showing great improvement and a competitive spirit.
Soccer
The
boys varsity soccer team began their playoffs by defeating Houma Christian.
Click here for the Nola.com story. Their next match will be Wednesday, February 6 versus North Vermillion at 6:00 p.m. on Lupin Field.
The girls varsity soccer team beat #26 West Feliciana in the first round of the state playoffs (6-0). Their next game will be team on Wednesday versus Archbishop Hannan in the second round of the state playoffs at 4:00 p.m. on Lupin Field.
The middle school girls soccer team won the League Championship! The final game was 4-0 over Sacred Heart. Tournament scoring totals were Newman 18, opponents 1.
Indoor Track and Field
Last weekend the girls track team competed in their third indoor meet in an attempt to qualify for the Indoor State Championships on February 23. The team got outstanding performances from Avery Rowan, who finished 4th in the 55 hurdles and set a new school record with a time of 9.39 seconds. Jamie Hawkins had a stellar performance in the triple jump, finishing 3rd overall with a jump of 32' 7.5". And the 4x400 team of Camille Barnett, Avery Rowan, Danielle Wharton, and Tiffany Wilson ran a qualifying time if 4:34.38, currently ranking them 4th in the state in Division II. Overall, there were four personal best marks set, six seasonal bests, and one school record for the Greenies. Nice job!
Thirteen of the boys track team members competed in McNeese State University’s second high school invitational this past Saturday in Lake Charles. Individually they had nine seasonal best efforts, all of which were also career personal records. Of particular note were Michael Downing’s time of 2:19.78 in the 800 meter run, which placed him 14th overall; Kendall Bussey’s time of 6.97 in the 55 meter dash, which placed him in the semifinals in which he finished 11th overall; and Pierce McNamara’s put of 30’ 7 ½” which, placed him 10th overall.
No team points were kept due to the presence of track clubs in the competition. The final qualifying meet of the season for those attempting to qualify for the State Indoor Meet will be this Saturday at LSU in Baton Rouge.
