With Daylight Savings Time, we are springing forward an hour, and the spring sports teams are springing into action. Check out the latest in golf, baseball, tennis, and outdoor track and field in this week’s Monday Sports Wrap.

Golf
 
The Newman boys golf team competed in two matches this week.
 
On Monday, the team fell to Jesuit and ED White in a tri-meet at Lakewood Golf Club (ED White—157, Jesuit—163, Newman—178). Price Butcher, a Newman freshman, earned medalist honors and set the school record for 9-hole score in his first official high school competition with a 33 (-3).
 
On Wednesday, the team lost to Northlake Christian (350-376) in an 18-hole dual match at Tchefuncta Country Club in Covington. The boys will return to Tchefuncta for the District Tournament (the first round of the postseason) on Tuesday, April 16.
 
Baseball
 
The varsity baseball team defeated De La Salle 22-7 on Tuesday at Wesley Barrow Stadium. Jack Miller led the offense with four hits, four runs scored, and three runs batted in. Starting pitcher Dylan Bush earned his first varsity win and Walt Marcus pitched three scoreless innings for his first varsity save.
 
The varsity team also participated in the AA Challenge in Baton Rouge. On Friday, the Greenies rallied with three runs in the bottom of the 7th inning to defeat Family Christian 5-4. Jamie Smith had three hits, including a double and a triple, and drove in four runs. Smith’s two-run single in the 7th tied the game before Eli Sterbcow singled to drive Jay Tyler home with the winning run. Emile Garon had three hits and scored three runs. Starting pitcher Greg Plaisance allowed no earned runs in 4.2 innings and Dylan Bush pitched 2.1 innings of scoreless relief for the win.
 
On Saturday, the Greenies erased a 5-0 deficit with six runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning and went on to defeat Albany 10-5. Jay Tyler, Artney Olivero, and Jack Miller each had two hits and William Sumrall led the team with three runs batted in. Starting pitcher Eli Sterbcow allowed only two earned runs in five innings. In the second game of the day, the Greenies fell 5-0 to University High.
 
The varsity plays three games at Chalmette this week, facing South Plaquemines at 5:45 p.m. and John Curtis at 8:00 p.m. on Thursday and Chalmette at 8:00 p.m. on Friday.
 
The JV baseball team made its season debut with a 4-2 victory over Chalmette on Tuesday. Alex Abramson, Jack Miller, Allen Dennis, Cass Lapeyre, and David Richard combined for a no-hitter and struck out fifteen Owls. The JV team plays at Chalmette again this Monday at 4:30 p.m. and at Fisher on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
 
Outdoor Track and Field
 
We competed in Mandeville High School’s Skipper Relays this past Saturday.
 
This past Saturday the girls varsity track and field team placed 7th overall scoring 45 points. Nineteen other schools competed in the girls division including: Cabrini, St. Scholastica, Mount Carmel, Mandeville, Xavier Prep, Dominican, Newman, Ascension, Chapelle, Helen Cox, McGehee, Ben Franklin, First Baptist, Ursuline, Lusher, Varnado, Lake Area, St. Mary’s, and Country Day.
 
Scoring points for the Greenies in individual events were Avery Rowan in the 100 hurdles, 300 hurdles, and high jump, where she was the meet champion jumping 5’-2”, and Jamie Hawkins, who earned points in the triple jump. In the relay events, Jamie Hawkins, Peyton LeCorgne, Tiffany Wilson, and Haley Johnson were meet champions in the 1600 Spring Medley with a time of 4:30.39. Camille Barnett, Peyton LeCorgne, Haley Johnson, and Tiffany Wilson placed 2nd in the 4x400 Relay. Also, Personal Best times or marks were set by Bizzy Margolin, Sarah Harlan, Miranda Heath, and Julia Pindaro. Way to go, ladies!
 
Individually, the boys varsity track and field team had thirteen seasonal best efforts, of which seven were also career personal records. Some of the better efforts were: our 3rd place finish in the 1600 meter relay by the team composed of Allen Kuhn, Philip Lapeyre, DaRon Joiner and Justin Harrell who ran a seasonal best time of 3:43.84; DaRon Joiner’s 2nd place in the pole vault with a career personal record of 11’ 0”; and Justin Harrell’s 1st place in the high jump with a seasonal best effort of 6’ 4”.
 
As a team we scored 35 points, which placed us 5th overall in the 10-team field.
 
The next meet will be the Judy Baehr Relays on Friday, March 15 at St. Scholastica Academy in Covington with field events beginning at 3:00 p.m. and track events at 4:00 p.m. Also, Newman will need volunteers to help run the Newman Invitational Track and Field Meet on Thursday, March 28 at West Jeff Stadium starting at 6:00 p.m. Please come support our team!
