Newman Middle School Artists to Exhibit at the Ogden

[FULL STORY]

The ISAS Art Show is scheduled for Thursday, January 30 at the Odgen Museum of Southern Art, and Newman will have a strong presence there. The exhibition, titled Sense of Place, features the work of student-artists form local independent schools. This free art reception will run from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on the third floor of the Odgen.

Each school was allowed to enter one piece, so the students in Sheila Connolly’s middle school art rotation collaborated on a large collage. The students worked individually on charcoal and pastel images of Louisiana fish and fowl on Kraft paper. Others worked on the background of the three panels that make up the triptych. Then the images were cut our ands added to the panels, making a huge, 3x6-foot work.

Two of Ms. Connolly’s students, Beau VanDenburg ’19 and Abhi Jani ’18, created a website to collect and showcase their fellow students’ work. The two designed the website as an encyclopedia of the animals featured on the piece. With the help of resident ornithologist and Head of Middle School Phillip Wallace and Science Instructor Dr. Mike Guill, all of the animals were identified and labeled. The website also includes information about the art exhibition. You can view the artwork and get information about the show here: j.mp/NewmanArt.

Please come out and support Newman’s artists by attending the Sense of Place Exhibition. With the success of the recent Student Exhibition and now this new foray in to the New Orleans art scene, Newman students are making quite a name for themselves.
