Newman Celebrates Homecoming

[FULL STORY]

Today Newman recognized the members of the 2015 Homecoming Court in a ceremony for the Upper School. This year a new tradition began: the designation of a Homecoming King, a male member of the court who was selected by his peers for his exemplary leadership of the class. Newman’s first Homecoming King, Austin Carriere, joined Lexie Gottsegen as Queen and the other members of the court on stage for recognition, and to hear remarks by Tracy Blackerby ’06.

Blackerby, a Lower School physical education teacher and three-sport coach in the Middle and Upper Schools, reflected on the true meaning of homecoming through the lens of her experience as a member of Newman’s “Katrina class” (the class who experienced Katrina in their graduating year). Tracy and her peers spent the first semester of their senior year scattered at various schools throughout the country, and their Homecoming, held the following January, took on a profound meaning. Tracy encouraged seniors and underclassmen to remain involved in school life, to build relationships with peers, faculty, and staff, and to treasure their Newman experience.

Homecoming continues through Friday with themed hallway decorating, competition across grade levels, and costume days, all culminating in Friday’s varsity football game against Sophie B. Wright, where the court will be presented a halftime. Kickoff is at 7:00 p.m. on Michael Lupin Field, and all members of the Newman community are invited to attend.

Members of the 2015 Homecoming Court are Alex Abramson, Donovan Bendana, Austin Carriere, Emma Cole, McKenzie Cummins, Andrew Downing, Nicholas Favret, Lexie Gottsegen, Helen Hawkins, Camryn Jackson, Lillie Kuhn, Jack Miller, Mia Provenzano, Stephen Reynolds, and Elbert Thomas.
