Senior Hackett Cummins ’18 is New Orleans’ First D1 Lacrosse Recruit

Newman senior Hackett Cummins ’18 will take his lacrosse career to the next level with the NCAA Division I Furman University Paladins.

Cummins signed his letter of intent to play for Furman today in an afternoon ceremony in front of family, teammates, coaches, and classmates. According to Newman’s Head Lacrosse Coach Aaron Burns, he is the first Division I lacrosse recruit to come out of New Orleans.

Cummins, also an offensive lineman for the Greenie football team, was instrumental in the founding of Newman’s varsity lacrosse squad in 2016–2017, where his teammates selected him as captain for two years under Coach Burns. In the team’s inaugural season, Cummins led the Greenie defense in all statistical categories and was recognized with LHSLL All-District and All-State honors.

“This is a really big day for Newman lacrosse, and for Hackett,” said Coach Burns, who acknowledged Cummins’ tireless work ethic and winning attitude in his remarks prior to the signing. “Hackett, all I ask is that you lead us one last time.”

Before signing the letter of intent, Cummins thanked Newman’s Athletic Department and the coaches who nurtured his development with the lacrosse, beginning with local club teams and culminating with this momentous event.

“When I first picked up a lacrosse stick, I never dreamed of signing for a Division I university,” Cummins said. “It’s been an honor to help start a lacrosse program at Newman.”

The Greenies take on Holy Cross in a scrimmage tonight (Jan. 19) at 7:30 p.m. on Michael Lupin Field.
