Athletics

Welcome

Dear Newman Parents,

For many years, Newman Athletics has played an important role in the lives of our students, faculty, parents, and alumni. As a former student-athlete and coach, and now as the Athletic Director, I strongly believe in the profound impact high school athletics can play in our students’ lives. With each and every season come valuable lessons in hard work, commitment, teamwork, and learning how to persevere through adversity. Our sports programs offer our students a unique opportunity to continue their learning outside of the classroom, and this experience helps drive our coaches, the Athletic Department, and further drives the mission of the School.

In 2018-19, Newman will field 23 varsity sports at the Upper School level and 17 sports at the Middle School level. New programs such as High Performance and Varsity Lacrosse have matured into well established, thriving programs that are now integral components of our robust athletic offerings at Newman. These offerings have led to more than 85% of Newman Middle and Upper School students participating in at least one sport. Through the years, this type of participation, dedication, and hard work has produced 96 State Championships, including last year’s Girls and Boys Swimming and Girls Soccer State Championships. We are also very proud of the Girls Tennis team state runner-up finish, an undefeated regular season in Football and overall 11-1 record, and the 15 top-10 finishes by our many varsity programs. Along with the phenomenal team success last year, Newman athletes were recognized and honored for their individual achievements, with many of our athletes being named to the All-District, All-Metro, All-Region and All-State teams.

We are thrilled to formally introduce the Manning Family Athletic Complex. The new facilities that have been added include a grass practice field, a professionally turfed field (Kolb Field), a new concession and restroom facility, the Berger Family Sky Deck which provides a phenomenal vantage point to view games, a new press box and filming area, and two new soccer locker rooms. The signature space of the new project is Reginelli Way, an entrance to the complex which honors legendary football coach Tony Reginelli. There is no question these spaces are a tremendous addition to our stellar athletic facilities.

Newman’s rich history of competitive sports has set high expectations for our student-athletes and coaches. These high expectations motivate our student-athletes and coaches to strive to make their respective programs the very best they can be. Throughout this process, our student-athletes are presented with valuable life experiences as well as the opportunity to develop strong relationships with their teammates and their coaches. Ultimately, Newman Athletics allows our student-athletes to have a more well-rounded Newman experience.

Athletics at Newman are very special, and we in the Athletic Department appreciate your continued support. We look forward to seeing you at our many sporting events throughout the year.

Respectfully,

Patrick Summerour ’95
Athletic Director
