Special Recognition of Academic Achievement for Newman Students
National Merit Scholarship Program
During the fall of 2022, more than 1,500,000 juniors took the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). As seniors, 34,000 of these test-takers were named Commended Students; another 16,000 were named Semifinalists in the 2024 National Merit Scholarship competition.

National African American Recognition Award
The College Board’s National African American Recognition Program is an academic honor for exceptional African American students who have scored in the top 10 percent of the state on the PSAT or earned a score of 3 or higher on two or more Advanced Placement exams by their junior year. To qualify, they must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher.

National Hispanic Recognition Award
Each year, approximately 5,000 Hispanic and Latinx test takers from among 400,000 students taking the PSAT/NMSQT are acknowledged by the National Hispanic Recognition Program for their academic achievements and outstanding performance.
Two students from Newman were named National Hispanic Recognition Award recipients.
