Speech and Debate, like many extracurricular activities, has had to evolve with the pandemic, moving from an in-person to virtual format. While long bus rides, plane flights, and campus visits have been curtailed, competitions continue, with virtual events actually increasing accessibility and participation in regional and national competitions.
Case in point: Newman recently participated for the Stanford Invitational Tournament, covering the 3,000-mile transit with a click of a mouse. Our Speech and Debate members competed with about 400 other schools during the weekend event, and some of our youngest debaters made a very strong showing. See below for our results:
The team of Isabella Lombard ’24 and Noa Nasoff ’24 are the Tournament Champions in Novice Policy Debate.
Tournament Champion in Novice Declamation - Joseph Culotta ’24
Henry Hamilton ’23 advanced to the Octafinals Round (top 16 and second elimination debate) in Novice Lincoln Douglas Debate and was 13th overall speaker.
Sylvie Wilson ’24 advanced to the Double Octafinals Round (top 32 and first elimination debate) in Novice Lincoln Douglas Debate.
Noa Nasoff ’24 was 6th overall speaker in Novice Policy Debate.
Isabella Lombard ’24 was 12th overall speaker in Novice Policy Debate.
Please join us as we congratulate our Speech and Debate team for their outstanding performance at this very competitive event.
