NPA Volunteer Opportunities

There are so many ways to get involved at Newman! Volunteering not only helps the School, but also is very rewarding. Being a part of school activities allows you to stay in touch with parents, students, and faculty so that you know first-hand what is going on at Newman. There are many opportunities for you to participate and it's never too early or late in the school year to volunteer! Please review the opportunities listed below and complete the NPA Volunteer and Nomination Form. Thank you for your commitment to Newman.
NEWMANfund (Advancement Office)
Newman’s most important annual fundraising initiative is the NEWMANfund. The Advancement Office welcomes parent volunteers who are willing to help educate other parents (via phone and email) about the importance of the NEWMANfund and to encourage support to the School. If you are interested in volunteering, please email Mary Hoffman, Director of Advancement (MaryPeters@newmanschool.org).

ARTS SUPPORT
Volunteers work closely with Sheila Connolly, Chair of the Visual Arts, and Maritza Mercado-Narcisse, Chair of the Performing Arts. Help is needed with arts events including such tasks as ticket sales, concessions sales at Newman-based performances, organizing, setting up receptions, and cleaning up receptions and cast parties.

GREENIE BINGO
This is a community building and fundraising event that engages families in all four divisions of the School. This fun bingo event for the entire family takes place during a Varsity Basketball Game Day. Volunteers are needed to solicit prizes, handle hospitality, coordinate volunteers, help with set up and break down, send acknowledgement letters to donors, and have fun!

BOOK FAIR
Book Fair is a beloved Newman tradition and a celebration of the love of reading. We are excited to to host the Newman Book Fair on campus this year in the Reynolds Ryan Art Gallery. The chairs select the products and the books and help with planning, making decorations, staffing, and encouraging sales. Duties span from August through November. If you love to read or want to get to know parents from all school divisions, this is the job for you!

CARNIVAL UNDER THE STARS
Carnival Under the Stars is held at City Park Amusements and open only to the Newman Community during the event. Volunteer assistance is needed with soliciting sponsors, working the event, deciding on promotional items, and sending acknowledgement letters to the sponsors.

CONCESSIONS
Our committee chairs need help staffing our concessions stand for sports events, which is especially busy during football season. This is a great way to meet other parents!

DEI COMMITTEE
The NPA Committee for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion serves to ensure that all Newman families feel included, valued, and safe. This committee supports Newman's DEI efforts, programs, and activities on campus.

DESK VOLUNTEERS
The Coordinator is responsible for creating a monthly volunteer calendar and reminding volunteers of their scheduled shift. Volunteers provide one hour per day phone relief for the Middle and Upper School offices to answer the phones and assist with general questions.

FACILITIES APPRECIATION
Lunch is arranged for the wonderful facilities team as an expression of NPA’s appreciation for all they do for the Newman Community. One luncheon is held in the fall and another luncheon is held in the spring.

FACULTY APPRECIATION
NPA prepares treats for faculty and staff at different times throughout the year to show our appreciation for all they do to help our children succeed. Co-chairs organize volunteers to set up and clean up, and make food arrangements.

GREEN TREES
There are several opportunities for parents of Green Trees students to volunteer. Each classroom has a Room Parent; we host Special Friends Day in the spring; the Faculty Appreciation Committee helps show gratitude to our educators; and we have an Event Committee who helps plan Fall Fest, the Mardi Gras Parade, and the Week of the Young Child.

GREENIE CONNECTION
One of our most important relationship-building positions within the NPA, Greenie Connection volunteers formally welcome families who are new to Newman! Current Newman families are “connected” to incoming families to answer any questions they may have about the School and help make the transition to the new environment–for both the student and parents–as easy as possible. This job is especially busy over the summer and volunteers are encouraged to stay in touch with the new families throughout the school year. Volunteers are also needed as new students are admitted during the school year.
GreenieFest
Please plan to join us on campus in the Spring for great food, music, games, and races. This event is a great community-building event and fundraiser, and is wildly popular among Green Trees and Lower School Families.

HELPING HANDS CHAIR
Helping Hands is a committee of volunteers established to provide compassionate, confidential assistance to those in distress or need within our Newman community. Chairs create a meal and/or care calendar for families who may have an ill member or a passing in the family and volunteers are needed to sign up for shifts.

LIBRARY SUPPORT (Lower School)
Volunteers are needed throughout the year to help Lower School Librarian Lindsey Loop with restocking books, preparing displays and decorations, and preparing and shelving new books. Volunteers will sign up for shifts to work in the library that will be coordinated by the committee chairs. Volunteers are needed on a weekly basis to help.

LIBRARY SUPPORT (Middle and Upper School)
Coordinated by the committee chairs, volunteers will sign up for shifts to work in the library.

N'SPIRATION (occurs in odd years)
or SPRING PARTY (occurs in even years)
Volunteers are needed to help plan and implement a wonderful evening of food, fun, and camaraderie. This is the NPA's largest fundraiser. Whether you can plan a party, design invitations, work on food and beverages, plan and implement the entertainment, work on decorations, handle logistics, do check-in or check-out, or set up and/or tear down, your expertise is invaluable. There are numerous opportunities to volunteer for N'Spiration. The planning and preparation begin months before the event and it’s a great way to meet people! A lot of help is needed for setup for the event and clean up as well.

NEWMAN RESALE SHOP
Throughout the year, used uniforms and spirit items in good condition are collected and sold at our Newman Resale Shop. This is a great fundraiser, truly a “green” program, and an excellent opportunity to meet parents. Volunteers organize and run the sales that occur throughout the year. Volunteers help get all the merchandise ready for the sale.

ROOM PARENTS
We invite one room parent to represent each classroom in Green Trees and Lower School and two room parents per grade in the Middle and Upper School. The parent serves throughout the year as a liaison to the NPA, helps arrange events, helps teachers, and encourages parents to get involved. Lower School Room Parents help with Special Friends Day, field trips and provide volunteers for classroom support when requested. The largest duties for Middle School Room Parents surround class trips. Senior Room Parents help with commencement when their child is in their junior year and their responsibilities extend throughout their child’s senior year.

SPECIAL FRIENDS DAY
Special Friends Day is a significant event during which family members and friends of lower school students are invited to campus. Volunteers are needed to help with logistics, planning, photography, set up, and welcoming visitors throughout the morning.

SPEECH & DEBATE LIAISON
Volunteers work closely with the debate coaches and specifically help with many aspects of the Newman Invitational Tournament which is held in December (i.e. volunteers, hospitality, etc.).
